Chapter 15

I had never been in Connor’s room before. I don’t think many people had, besides his close friends and his girlfriend.

I glanced between the desk chair and his bed, ultimately taking the chair to hole up in. Once I sat, I pulled the letter out of the envelope and looked at the back.

Sure enough, another crossword puzzle was on there with another box circled. The letter that intersected five across—the perceived attitude—and three down had a circle around it.

Flipping the page over, I read, blocking out all the noise from the party downstairs.

Dear Marley–

I see what you’re doing. I also know you haven’t told anyone the actual clues. That you’re keeping all of that to yourself.

And… I appreciate that. I really do. While I admit, playing this game wasn’t on the top of the list for things to do senior year, maybe it’s not so bad after all.

You’ve been playing a good game so far. I’m not sure how many words you’ve figured out, if any at all, but knowing that you’re having fun makes it better. It makes me want to have fun with it.

Hence the reason I left this at Connor’s party. You want to be open, so let’s be open.

3 down. 7 letters. Clue: look after.

If you haven’t figured it out, most of these clues describe me. Or rather, how I see myself. I don’t really care how others see me, so this is more personal. But this one… this one is big for me. I don’t take this lightly, and I do my best to make sure I look after the few I’m close to, whether they know it or not.

And now, that includes you, Marley. You don’t know it yet, but you’ve wiggled yourself into my life in a manner I’m not sure what to do about yet.

I’ll figure it out. Just like you’ll figure out the puzzle.
